A NEW STANDARD OF PUBLIC SERVICE 

The Treasurer of Salt Lake County is legally responsible for billing and collecting taxes for the County and all political jurisdictions within its borders, and is responsible for distributing and investing these funds.  However, we also expect an elected official to promote the interests of the public and to be open and accountable in the conduct of the people’s business.

An elected County Treasurer must also inform and assist County residents regarding tax relief, educate the public on tax and fiscal issues, and provide meaningful measures of performance.

MY PLEDGE TO YOU -- ACCOUNTABILITY

Mayor Corroon has made the development and use of meaningful performance measures a major goal for county agencies.  If you look at the current Treasurer’s website you’ll find that he confines “measures of performance” to the dollar value of the taxes billed, collected, and distributed.  I believe you have a right to know much more!  How successful is the current Treasurer in ensuring that all eligible properties are assessed and all taxes paid?  How is the decision to invest our money made?  Where is the money invested?

The current Treasurer’s performance in investing our tax dollars is not evaluated.  What kind of return is the County getting on our money as compared to other public entities or even  as compared to the market in general?  

What has the current Treasurer done to insure that all eligible taxpayers are receiving the help they deserve?

I am committed to real accountability by the Treasurer’s Office and I will provide full disclosure.

MY PLEDGE TO YOU -- COMMUNITY OUTREACH

       
Many people simply do not realize that they are eligible for tax relief.

I will initiate a community outreach effort using every available means of communication to inform the citizenry of these programs.  I will simplify the application process and provide assistance when needed, especially to seniors and those disadvantaged by disability or illness.   Mayor Corroon has expanded volunteer efforts to assist people with personal income taxes.  I will work to insure that taxpayers eligible for property tax relief receive similar assistance.

MY PLEDGE TO YOU -- IMPROVED SERVICE AND ACCESS

         
Currently you can go on-line to pay property taxes, compare property valuations, and find tax delinquencies – but you cannot apply for tax relief.

I will make it easy for you to find out about available tax relief programs.  Clear and concise information will be available on our web-site, at our County office, and at other convenient locations.   I will also work with Mayor Corroon to insure that the computer labs in county libraries, senior centers, and multi-purpose centers are available to help you.

I will be your independent voice!  I will work with government officials to pursue tax reform which results in a strong, diversified revenue structure that is equitable and responsible.  I will work to educate taxpayers about the various services that are currently underwritten by property taxes.
